UGANDA'S DENNIS KASUMBA OFF TO THE USA FOR BASEBALL TRIALS

Ugandan baseball player Dennis Kasumba is off to the USA for trials in the Major League Baseball (MLB) draft league.

If he qualifies, he will then be placed in one of the MLB teams of the College League.

Kasumba,19, a player for the Gayaza Baseball and Softball Club is a catcher who has attracted the attention of baseball and softball scouts from MLB in the US.

He left the country on Sunday, May 28, and will be playing for the MLB Draft League in Maryland.

MLB Draft League has 6 teams and he will play for the Fredrick Keys.

“I want to do my best to represent Uganda and pass the tryout to get signed by MLB teams or College teams. Then come back to develop and promote Ugandan baseball,” Kasumba noted.

On his journey in the game, Kasumba says starting the game at a young age has been fundamental to learning the basics.

“I started playing baseball in Gayaza in 2013 under legendary player Richard Nsereko. I joined the national team for the U-18 and U-23 in 2019 and have always been keen to improve my game. I am going to use the professional stint to be a better player and inspire others,” Kasumba added before departure.

His coach at Gayaza, John Bosco Ssempa has said Kasumba is the first Ugandan player to go for the MLB Draft League tryouts.

“The other three in the US were signed directly from Ugandan teams without going through these tryouts. Kasumba’s strength is his good tactics to catch the ball,” noted Ssempa.

The three Ugandans at the MLB are Ben Sserunkuma and Umar Male for the Dodgers with David Mitoma playing for the Pirates.
